The Kent Prep Difference
Adaptive testing changes what preparation has to look like. A student who answers well is handed harder questions, which means the ceiling matters more than the floor. So we train above the level the test will reach.
In practice, that means three things.
- Harder material than the exam. Students work problems above SHSAT difficulty throughout the course. When the test adapts upward, they have already been there.
- Repeated full-length mocks with error analysis. Eight proctored exams across the course. Every one is reviewed by question type, so a student learns their own error patterns rather than just a score.
- Pacing under pressure. Timing discipline, when to commit to an answer, and when to move on. Under adaptive conditions an early error costs more than a late one, and pacing is what prevents them.
Beyond test preparation, our counselors work with families on school selection, because the right specialized high school matters as much as the offer itself.

Cutoff scores are the lowest score that received an offer at each school. They shift year to year based on applicant pool size and seat availability. Use these as your benchmark, not your ceiling.

SHSAT Prep for 8th Graders: Live Online Classes in NYC
FALL 2026 · FOR STUDENTS TESTING NOVEMBER 18
For 8th graders sitting the SHSAT this November. Twice-weekly live instruction online, plus weekly Saturday mock exams students can sit in person at our Midtown office. The SHSAT is given once a year and the score is the only thing the eight specialized high schools look at. There is no retake and no second application, which is why we have built this course around repetition under real conditions since 1989.

Kent Pre-High School Prep: Admissions Test Preparation for 7th Graders
FALL 2026 – SPRING 2027 · SHSAT, ISEE, SSAT, TACHS, HSPT
For 7th graders a year out from high school admissions testing. New York runs four separate admissions systems with five exams between them, and most families we meet have no idea yet which one their child will end up taking. That’s normal. This course prepares for all of them.
